Ezekiel Azonwu is one of the most visible faces in the gospel spoken word scene all over the world, today. He is billed to perform at the Rhyme and Reason concert happening in Lagos on the 14th of December. In this interview, he tells us a bit about his life, heritage, art, and his expectations when he comes to Nigeria for the first time ever. Read what he has to say.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your art
I am a husband and father of 3. I consider myself a lyrical evangelist. My main purpose is to enlighten people with the knowledge of God and His heart.
When did you start performing rap/spoken word/music, and how has the journey been since?
I’ve been doing spoken word for 4 years but have been writing and performing rap since 13 years old. I’ve been sensitive to God’s will and it has been good. Walking by faith especially in this form of ministry is a must. I’ve been full time for about a year and God has been faithful.
Have you ever been to Nigeria?
No I have not. Although I am originally Nigerian.
What have you heard about Nigeria, and what exactly are you looking forward to?
I know Nigeria is good ground for spoken word to explode. I’m looking forward to great reception and passion to be ignited.
Do you have fans who contact you from Nigeria regularly, who are particularly excited to have you come this time around?
People contact me all the time about how I have inspired them or helped changed them from Nigeria. But All glory belongs to God!
What do you have to say to your fans in Nigeria?
I don’t necessarily like the word fans! But to all my friends, I’m looking forward to seeing you and having an awesome time at the event! We will turn up.
What should the attenders of rhyme and reason concert be expecting from you at the event?
Attendees should expect raw and passionate spoken word, but more so to expect the unexpected!
Any word of advice for people who would want to be doing what you are doing?
Stay focused on Christ. Don’t be afraid to be you. The world doesn’t need another Ezekiel. The world needs you to be you. That’s one risk worth taking.
